Once more unto the Dales:

Dear friends, backpackers, and countrymen; lend me your ear:

I am heading out this weekend; backpacking in the Yorkshire Dales again.  Meeting with TerryBND and Maz.

Kit wise the rather good MLD SoloMid is packed in the go-to pack, the HMG Porter.

Kit list is attached.  I will do a report next week, and then summarise the kit used this year so far.   Then talk about my planning for the big summer walk, along with why I bought the Porter pack and will be using the SoloMid and not the Trailstar.

Patagonia Down vest - you got one of those too? I got one a few weeks ago, bargain price, on the recommend of Mr Chris T - but still pricey. Been getting anxious re. was it a good buy?

James it was Chris T who told me get one.  I used it on my Crossfell trip - I got a L as it fits well and I want it under stuff.  It is a good bit of kit.  So far impressed.  I got mine in a sale.  Still, not cheap.

Indeed, not cheap even at knock down price. Idea was, it was a good piece of "optimisation" re. warmth and bulk. Used it on Cruachan few weeks ago and saw its value, but not since. Think mine is L too - its not "close fitting" on me at all, but "comfortable", which I prefer.

How do you find the Crosslites Martin ?  My wife finds innov8s not padded enough even with superfeet footbeds.

Nice kit list Martin. I must say the Icebreaker base layer was a bit of a surprise, i had it in my head that you totally disliked Merino.

I got exactly the same comments from camdencycles, but with a different name. I decided it was spam, though. I didn't click the links.
Have a happy time in the Dales with your lovely kit list!

Binned them Mike.  Annoying when spam gets past the filter.  Dales was superb and will do a report soon.  Thanks.

I hate it in the wet.  Got a few folks saying the 150 is good even in the wet.  So I have had this top a long time, and have used it for camp mostly.  I plan to use it under a hard shell in the rain and see if its any good.

You would have enjoyed the walk Alan.

I really like them.  Patched this pair up as I had a split in one of them.  Not as good as the Raptors on wet rock etc.  But the sole is superb on mud, grass and the like.  Low profile I like.  Fit and heel cup are top draw for me Greg.  All come down to one thing.  "fit"  so try some on and see.

Hi Martin, I’m sure i would have enjoyed the walk. We are off for 4 days this thursday. But base camping on a new site for us.
I have 6 merino tops of various designs and manufacturer’s. I like to wear them as a second layer, over my Rohan ultra silver crew. I don’t like the feel of merino when sweaty or wet thats why i wear it the way i do. I also don’t think they are as warm as the impression is given but i still like them.

Not as warm, and so far not good in the wet for me Alan.  But I will take the advice of others and give the 150 a go in the wet.  I like you idea.  Lots thin layers is good anyway gives flexibility.  Have a great trip.
